I think book clubs are a really cool idea and reading is so important for students, but I’m not sure that it is ideal for a content area class. I think it might take too long and you would probably need to give students a long time to read the book to help break it down better. I personally think it is a better idea to go through a content related book and find passages/chapters that you as a teacher believe are important and present those in some way. I think this still offers important aspects of reading and will still help students’ reading skills without placing a huge burden on them outside of class and making it seem like busy work. With those passages being read and being talked about in class, I think it would be super cool for students to create a podcast about it in class. It would show their understanding of what they have read and provide insight into what they are thinking about the text provided and what impact it has on them. It is a way for the students to really get involved and make an assignment fun so I think they would be really into it.Tuesday, November 13, 2018

I agree. I think that maybe not reading the whole book, but parts of the book can be and maybe even should be used for certain classes, such as social studies, to supplement the course material. For example, using excerpts from books and relating the excerpts chosen or chapters chosen, and the content of those, to what you are talking about in class. For example, Hidden Figures has a lot of dense and descriptive content in it about Civil Rights and Women’s rights. It includes references to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a Dream Speech” and the Rosa Parks bus incident and the affects of those events. There are many examples of what it was like for them to have to use different “colored” bathrooms and how they fought back by taking down the signs and just always putting their best foot forward to represent their race in the best possible way. So, I think that certain excerpts from the book can be used to give further information and insight to the students about certain events.
